Can-Fit-Pro has created an educational partnership with Human Kinetics Incorporated to provide advanced level certification for fitness instructors. This exceptional educational opportunity combines the high quality academic programs developed by Human Kinetics with the cutting edge practical training developed by Can-Fit-Pro. Human Kinetics is the premier knowledge integrator in the physical activity field by producing textbooks, consumer books, software, videos, DVDs, audiocassettes and CDs as well as distance education courses. Can-Fit-Pro is the host of Canada’s largest fitness conference and trade show and is recognized as one of Canada’s leading fitness certification agencies. The partnership brings the strength of education from both of these companies together to create a new level of certification.

Why Study Advanced Fitness Instruction?
The fitness instruction industry has grown at a rapid rate over the past 10 years. The industry that began as a hi/low or low impact class of “aerobics” for members is now a diverse profession that provides a group fitness experience to a diverse participant base including adults, older adults, athletes, and individuals with many special needs. As the industry has grown, so have the demands for fitness instruction education and practical training that will allow instructors to teach a variety of class specialties and intensity levels. This program provides the next level of education for fitness instructors to gain more in-depth knowledge and skills that will meet the ever changing needs of the group exercise participants of today and tomorrow. The Advanced Fitness Instructor Specialist certification is designed to help fitness instructors advance their credentials and abilities.

Advanced Fitness Instructor Specialist Education
This program is very unique and is designed to meet the needs of busy fitness instructors all across Canada. The theory component of this program is delivered by Human Kinetics’ online distance education program. The candidate will experience interactive and exciting education in the comfort of their own home. The academic courses are available at any time and the choices will stimulate your interests and help drive your fitness instructor knowledge forward. Students work at their own pace to complete the theory courses online. The instructor receives credit for attaining new technical skills when they attend a minimum of a 5 hour Practical Techniques training program. The Practical Skills component of this program is delivered in an 8 hour (one day) hands on skills course in major centers across Canada by a Can-Fit-Pro PRO Trainer.

The Theory Courses
Candidates choose two courses from the Can-Fit-Pro approved list of Human Kinetics online courses. Topics include: Exercise Nutrition, Advanced Exercise Nutrition, Weight Management, Fitness for Older Adults, Fitness Through Cycling, Fitness Program Design for Sedentary and Active People, Fitness Through Walking and Running, Supplementation for Training or Performance, Cardiorespiratory Fitness Assessment and Prescription, Group Fitness Through Hi/Lo, Cardioboxing and Step, Advanced Power Training, Advanced Training for Muscular Endurance, Exercise Physiology, Advanced Strength Training, Muscular Fitness Assessment and Prescription, Pre-Exercise Health Screening.

The Practical Techniques Course
The practical techniques portion of this program can be achieved by attending a minimum of a 5 hour specialized training workshop in Step, Cycling, Martial Arts, Resist-A-Ball™, BOSU™, Pilates, Fusion, Yoga, Body Training Systems, or Sport Conditioning.

Candidates are required to submit a certificate of completion from their techniques course that demonstrates they have attended at least one of the above programs. Look for course dates in your area at www.canfitpro.com

The Practical Skills Course
The 8 hour (one day) practical skills course topics include:
• Understanding mechanics (muscle and movement)
• Functional Training and Integrated movement
• Advanced cardiovascular complexity teaching techniques
• Advanced resistance training techniques with studio equipment
• Performance skills through technical precision, cueing and confidence
The Practical Skills course is delivered locally by a Can-Fit-Pro PRO Trainer with the assistance of the Advanced Fitness Instructor Specialist Manual and Workbook. The best authors in the fitness business including Douglas Brooks, Maureen Hagan, Sherri Macmillan, Marla Ericksen and Krista Popowych have contributed to this very unique resource.

Evaluation
The Certification process is evaluated as the candidate progresses through each component of the program. Each online course includes an online exam at the conclusion of the course of study. Participants are required to successfully complete the exam and receive a passing grade to receive credit for each of the theory courses required for certification. Candidates will also complete a workbook during the practical skills training day to evaluate their practical application abilities. Candidates have 2 years to complete the advanced certification components in order to qualify for the advanced designation.

A Certified Advanced Fitness Instructor Specialist Provides:

Candidates who have a current Group Fitness Certification, which is recognized by the Certification Request Program, may add the Can-Fit-Pro Fitness Instructor Specialist (FIS) as another credential.

Fitness Instructor Specialist – FIS

The Can-Fit-Pro Fitness Instructor Specialist Certification is a land based certification. We unfortunately do not specialize or certify candidates in Yoga, Pilates, Cycling, Aqua Fitness. Therefore cannot accept Certification Request with those specialties listed above.
