We are all aware that there are tremendous health benefits from exercise. Mental health and well-being are increasingly seen as a top priority, with a strong connection to overall health. Fitness professionals have numerous opportunities to bring their expertise and services into healthcare as Wellness Advocates – it defines us and opens exciting opportunities as we fulfill our responsibilities to members and clients. As Lisa Greenbaum, Founder and Lead Trainer for Sangha Yoga Collective says, “The thing is – it’s us! It’s all of us. All of us working inside the fitness and wellness industry have an incredible role to play. We know that fitness supports mental health, but it is more than that.”

Medical fitness is an emerging field that offers fitness business leaders opportunities to expand their impact and better serve customers. By uniting fitness professionals with healthcare providers, it bridges the gap between proactive and reactive healthcare. This collaboration fosters partnerships that can reshape roles and identities within both sectors. To facilitate this constructive collaboration, fitness leaders should explore the connections between medical fitness and the fitness industry, highlighting the benefits of understanding this area and the potential career opportunities it presents.

Holistic wellness integration is about recognizing the interplay between physical fitness, mental health, nutrition, and social well-being and creating comprehensive wellness programs. This is a shared goal between fitness professionals and medical fitness. Creating holistic approaches requires perspective and accountability and is one of the reasons wellness advocates have never been more needed. Greenbaum stresses that “This needs to start at the top, among senior leadership teams and owners. It needs to be put in place and modelled by those in charge to help open the conversation and create a more compassionate and empathetic workplace.”

Another point of constructive collaboration between medical fitness and the fitness industry is in building awareness for mind-body connection. The 2024 canfitpro Fitness Trends Report features “Mental Health and Stress Management Programs” and “Mind-Body Programs” as top 10 trends. We cannot work in isolation. Greenbaum goes on to say, “Everyone working within fitness/wellness spaces should be educated in how to support both our own, and our members mental health.”  Additionally, Dr. Joel Kerr affirms that “There is a blend of traditional methods of fitness with a resurgence of strength training for everyone with emphasis on inclusion of age, gender, and body size. There is an emphasis on mental health and the importance of understanding the mind-body connection, which, if we reflect to the previous fitness trends, we will see.” The time is now for all of us as leaders to take accountability and lead by example. Join us for the canfitpro ASPIRES Series—Mental Health event on November 1st.  Learnnew ways to manage stress and improve your emotional intelligence to help you work better and create a better workplace culture.

In addition, several types of wearables like fitness trackers and Apple watches have become a standard accessory. These products are helpful for monitoring health and providing real-time feedback for different variables such as heart rate, activity levels, and even blood pressure. Dr. Kerr supports the use of technology and fitness and the connection to medical fitness, commenting that “Technology makes fitness cool and whatever we need to do to keep young people engaged, I am all for it. With that being said, I applaud the balance of traditional, wholesome, and advanced tech of the 2024 fitness trends because consumers have safe, fun, and challenging options for a healthy dose of exercise, because EXERCISE IS MEDICINE!

The world is changing and with the ever-increasing pace and demands in life we need innovative and comprehensive strategies for advocating wellness. If you want your business and career to thrive, then embracing collaboration and expanding your offerings is the way to go. These trends and synergies between medical fitness and the fitness industry reflect a growing understanding of the connection between physical activity and overall health.
