Core Concepts

The occurrence of back pain within our society has soared in recent years. Many of the causes can be traced back to poor core exercise prescription and improper exercise technique. This calls for a change to our traditional core exercise prescription paradigm. This course will provide participants with the confidence and competence to develop a progressive core training program that is specific to an individual's capacity through a simple, research based, practical approach to core testing and exercise prescription.

Topics Covered:

  • Anatomy of the spine and core
  • Back injuries (causes and management)
  • Proper breathing technique
  • Core muscle testing
  • Core exercise categories (regressions and progressions)
  • Coaching and cueing techniques
  • Programming

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Understand the functional anatomy of the spine and core
  • Identify the forces acting on the spine and their role in back pain
  • Assess and correct breathing patterns
  • Recognize weakness and imbalance in core musculature through graded assessment
  • Categorize clients into one of four core training categories using basic tests
  • Demonstrate an ability to regress and progress numerous core exercises
  • Develop a training program including appropriate programming of core exercises
